Motorcycle Practical Test – Module 2

Before you can attempt Module 2 you must have passed Module 1.

Module 2 is a test of your on road riding ability.  You need to wear suitable clothing and have with you your CBT (DL196), your Theory and Hazard Perception Test pass certificate (less than 2 years old), your Practical Test Module 1 pass certificate and a valid licence.  You must use the same category and size bike that you used in Module 1.

This module usually takes 40 minutes to complete.

Preliminary exercises

You will be fitted with a radio receiver and taken outside to have an eyesight test.  This comprises reading a number plate at a distance of 20 metres.  If you fail to read it correctly after three attempts the test will not continue.

If you pass the eyesight test you will be asked two safety check questions.  Failure to answer correctly will result in a driving fault of 1 being recorded in each instance.

A short briefing and radio test follows before you go on the road.

Road riding

You will be expected to ride in various road and traffic conditions with your instructor following you, giving you instructions and observing.  Examples of the manoeuvres you will undertake are:

  • Pulling up on the left hand side of the road behind a parked vehicle and then moving off again, when it is safe to do so
  • Left and right turns off and onto main roads
  • Roundabouts
  • Traffic lights
  • Pedestrian crossings
  • If practical a hill start

Independent riding

There is a further section of the test when you will be asked to follow a series of directions or road signs.  Your instructor will be following and observing you and in particular assessing how you:

  • Make progress along the road
  • Keep up with traffic while maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you
  • Show confidence and good judgement
  • Pick the right speed for the type of road and traffic and weather conditions
  • Read road signs and adhere to speed limits
  • Are aware of and react to other road users, pedestrians, cyclists and animals

You will pass if you make:

  • 5 or less riding faults on Module 1
  • 10 or less riding faults on Module 2
  • No serious or dangerous faults

If you fail Module 2 you must wait 10 working days before applying to take it again.
